Salento, also called the salentina peninsula is known as the heel of Italy. It is a subregione of Italy that extends itself in the southern part of Puglia between the Ionic Sea to the west and the Adriatic Sea to the east. The inhabitants of the area are comprised of the providences of Leece, almost all of Brindisi and a part of Taranto. They distinguish themselves by the characteristics of glottologics and cultures in respect to the rest of the region. Historically Salento was famed for the land of Otranto.
The land of Arneo is a part of the Salentina peninsula, anlong the coast of the Ionic between San Pietro in Bevagna e Torre dell’Inserraglio, while within the land it extends itself all the way to Manduria, Veglie and Nardo. It gets its name from an ancient castle from the Norman times which was abandoned. It was located in the hinterland to northwest of Torre Lapillo. With the improvements inaugurated in giolittiana age and continued during the fascism and completed in the postwar period, the Ionic coast has grown many tourist villages, seaside establishments, villas and residential houses.
The communities of the Arneo region are: Porto Cesareo, Veglie, Avetrana, Leverano part of the Nardò territory, Copertino, Salice Salentino, Guagnano, San Pancrazio Salentino, Manduria.
